Top 6 Skills of a Great Web Analyst

What is one of the biggest problems in online marketing? Bryan Eisenberg puts it best: it’s our critically high demand for skilled people.

Why? One of the root causes is the supply and demand of data. As data becomes an exceedingly cheap commodity to online marketing professionals, the sheer supply of data creates a significant problem.

Tracking the do not track amendment

Fallout from a milestone decision at the FTC fizzled fears in the online community today, in a hearing that addressed the benefits and consequences of enacting a “do not track” option in web browsers.  Amongst some of the benefits: the ability to access certain free sites and the ability to enable some pretty cool technology.  But what did the decision really boil down to?  It really means the FTC thought enforcing a “do not track” amendment through the development of plugins was essentially “too hard“.  Excuse me?

If you’re spending money on anything these days, you need to know what you’re getting out of it. That includes your company’s involvement in social media. If you can’t see it, you can’t track it, so you might as well turn it off.

User-generated content: don’t delete your negative reviews

Following my interview with Chris Boggs, I realized that an important tangent eventually got paraphrased and edited to fit in a neat little editorial package.  The concept of user generated content isn’t new, you have user generated content everywhere you look: forums, blogs, social media platforms, ecommerce sites, review sites, YouTube, etc.  It’s been a long-lived belief that any UGC, whether it’s flattering or not, should be predominantly positive, and that’s just not true. Negative feedback is perhaps the single most underrated opportunity for reputation management the social web has to offer, so don’t delete your negative reviews. Read more…
