Can't-miss Search Engine Strategies San Jose Sessions, Day 4 Preview

SES San Jose Day 4 starts out with a bang, with Dan Heath, Author of “Made to Stick” appearing in the morning keynote.  It also seems that as the days progress, the sessions get more and more finely targeted.  Day 4 is no exception, with pretty advanced topics spanning most of the different track disciplines.  Find out what my picks are for Day 4…

10:15 AM — There we go, I was looking for a session involving David Szetela.  I’m hoping the session he’s participating in, “Effective Contextual Search Management,” sheds a bit of light on new advances in contextual match advertising.  For those of you that haven’t sat in on an SES “Site Clinic,” one is available in this timeslot and should be considered a strong alternate, with Jennifer Laycock of Search Engine Guide, and Fionn Downhill of Elixir Interactive, plus the obligatory Search Quality Analyst, Nathan Johns from Google rounding out the mix.

11:30 AM –Ooo, I like trademark protection sessions, especially because it’s one of the lesser-known and lesser-talked about aspects of paid search.  I’m definitely headed to “Trademark Issues: What SEMs Should Know” because I’ve always been a strong advocate of protecting companies from trademark infringement when it comes to online marketing.  Branding and intellectual property trademarks are by far, the #1 converting keywords your company can advertise.  So, protecting yourself with the help of advertiser networks, affiliate networks, and search engines is an absolute necessity before competitors start thinking about infringing on your copyrights.

1:30 PM — Call me a sucker for anything dubbed “Inside Intelligence” but if my attendance even provides me with one tactic I’ve been missing all these years, my time is not wasted.  On the other hand, validating what I already know might also be of some value.  My bet is that “The Best Kept Secrets to Search” will be the winner in this timeslot, simply because many of the other sessions may be overrun with audience questions and “open” discussion.

2:45 PM — To round out the conference, I’m headed to “In House SEO: Lessons Learned & Victories Won” because much of my online marketing experience has spawned from SEO.  I have no doubt that I’ll be involved in building a team of SEMs in future months, and SEO will definitely be a prerequisite.  The speaking panel seems to be well rounded as well, including representatives from the New York Times (who made a big push to online success), Microsoft, Cisco, and Yahoo.

So, that completes my predictions for best sessions at Search Engine Strategies San Jose.  If you haven’t already done so, make sure you RSVP for the Google Dance on Tuesday night, it should be wild.  I’m headed to Silicon Valley early to meet up with my good friends at Google, and probably won’t be posting until Monday, but am always accessible via e-mail.  Drop me a line using the contact form if you’re going to be at SES San Jose and want to meet up for a quick chat.
