This month in Google Trends

March 7th, 2008 Posted in Webmaster Tips, Analytics Tools

For those of you that are not familiar with Google Trends, it’s a fantastic online tool that lets you visualize search volume for specific keywords on Google, as well as the coverage those keywords get in news references.  Want to discover keywords on the move?  Try trending your keywords over the course of 6 months, you may just find a gem or two in the long tail.  In this post, I examine a few keywords that I think will become “movers and shakers” in the next few weeks and in the long term.

USA and Canada (Shared news)

  • The “gas prices” keyword phrase has doubled in search volume over the last few months, and with recent news of further price increases, it’s bound to get more attention through the summer months.
  • Search queries for “yahoo microsoft” are actually down significantly in past weeks, with little interest being shown by Americans and Canadians, I guess most are just assuming a merger is inevitable.
  • “Patrick Swayze” is generating “volcanic” search volume according to Google Trends.  However, targeting long tail on his name would just be cold.

Majority USA

  • Keywords “clinton” and “obama” both had furious search volume last month, which has tapered off marginally, but with the end of the democratic nomination looming, traffic is bound to heat up.
  • Wow, talk about a monumental increase in traffic!  “Kimmel” search terms have nearly quadrupled in volume in the past two weeks.  About half of the search volume in the United States is reflected in Canada.
  • “Interest rate” has actually fallen to about half the search volume from a peak in interest in mid-January.  It’s quite surprising that Americans dominate this keyword, since Canadian interest rates are at a 3 year low!
  • “Taxes” is also on the climb, with an overwhelming majority of searches in the USA, nearly three times that in Canada.

Majority Canada

  • Not surprisingly, the keyword “snowblower” is cornered strongly in Canada, with nearly 3 times the search volume as the United States.  Canadians are seething over record snowfall this year, with no end in sight.
  • “Oscar” put Canada in the top 10 regions, but dead last at position 10.  No Country for Old Men in the USA.
  • “Tax Canada” keywords are showing exponential growth in recent weeks, good for accountants, bad for people that owe the Feds income tax.
