Google Adwords Reports Scheduling Bug

Managing more than a few pay-per-click advertising campaigns can be pretty burdensome if you don’t set up automatic report scheduling.  I recommend that all advertisers run at least two critical monthly reports from within Adwords: a search query report and a content placement report.  Depending on your spend, you may want to schedule these two reports more often, but a few Adwords managers (including myself) have already noticed a little bug in the system.

In the last few weeks, it’s obvious that Google has made a few minor cosmetic changes to Adwords Reports.  Functionally, they are more or less identical to the old reports, but operate much quicker (it seems, thanks to a no-nonsense interface).  Many bloggers have criticized Google for changing the Reports interface.  Why?  I’m not sure.  I tend to agree that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but they did appear to make it load quicker - if you’re into that kind of thing.

With the upgrade came a problem that most campaign managers with more than a few clients will despise.   Automatic scheduling seems to be broken, not for the normal Adwords API reports, but for the Search Query and Content Placement reports.  I normally schedule these for weekly reporting, but lately when I check to see whether a report has completed, I receive a “Pending” status.

Google Adwords representatives are aware of the problem, and are working with the Analytics team to find a solution.   Until then, remember to double check that your scheduled Adwords reports are running!
