Canadians Love the USA (Weekend Special)

What am I doing posting articles on the weekend? With the Fed lowering interest rates this week, the Canadian dollar has traded higher than the American greenback for the first time in thirty years. Far from me to gloat on the subject, I would rather offer up a business case for American advertisers – start targeting Canadians NOW! Why?

  1. Canadians already know American brands very well, they don’t need much in the way of a greater value proposition, especially with the Canadian dollar now trading at about par.
  2. Canadians convert much better. On several of my ad campaigns, it’s obvious, Canadians click through and purchase at a much higher rate than their US counterparts.
  3. Canadians are looking for your products. A lot of the great products Americans take for granted, simply aren’t available in Canada. Brands like Target for example, don’t exist in Canada.
  4. Canadian multinationals suck. You heard me. Stores like Amazon do offer a Canadian version of their site with Amazon.ca, but it’s no where near as good as Amazon.com.
  5. Canadians won’t have to pay much tax. We’ll still get pegged with the GST once products cross the border, but at least we won’t have to pay provincial sales tax.
  6. Canadians are on the move. Don’t have an e-commerce site but are within driving distance of a Canuck city? It might be worth advertising on Canadian soil, we’re Jonesing for a road trip.
  7. Canadians love a ‘bargain’. Recent news broadcasts have indicated that Canadians searching for big-ticket items such as automobiles, are likely to make the trip to the US, even though registering the vehicle in Canada is inconvenient. We’re nutty!

My friends, now is the time to expand your horizons and go duck Canuck hunting. Advertise on Canadian soil and you might just bag a Canadian shopper.
